How to create the perfect Kitchen space for your home
There are a variety of things you need to consider, such as cost, lifestyle choices and how you and your family will make use of the space.
Do you have young children or pets? Is there direct access through the kitchen from the garden?
All of these things need to be taken into account before you start dreaming about door colour’s and granite worktops!
By considering the practicalities it will help shape your decision and ensure you install a kitchen that will last.
To help make your decision easier, we have made a small checklist for you to consider.
- Close dishwasher and sink placement
You don’t want to be dripping dirt all over your lovely new kitchen
- Do I need a breakfast bar?
Think about how your family spends their time in the kitchen. Do they grab a slice of toast and run or take the time for a chat while your preparing?
- Oven to sink location
You don’t want to be lugging pans of water from one side of the kitchen to the other! Keep them as close as possible.
- How many electric sockets should I have?
This is one of the most common mistakes people make in their kitchen. Remember there are a lot of electrical items you use on a daily basis. Kettle, toaster, food mixer, blender just to name a few. Where will these be stored in your new kitchen? You need to ensure your not unplugging things every time one of these comes out.
- Lighting
Consider again how the room will be used. Will there be a dining area? Do you want the option to soften the lighting? Are there any dark corners? What about lighting to create effect? Coloured LED’s look great around the plinth and give the kitchen a more interesting finish.
- Flooring
This is a massive area to consider! There are many options but these tend to be the most popular. Ceramic tile is very durable and resistant to scratches as well as being water resistant. It’s also easy to clean so perfect for kitchen spills.
Wood floors are great at coping with the number of feet usually in a kitchen and add a great “home” feeling. Wood flooring has a natural elegance, is easier on your back and feet and generally feels warmer. It’s also easy to clean and stain resistant.
- Storage space
The last thing you want to do is install a new kitchen and find you don’t have enough space to store everything! Think about where you are likely to keep everything. Cereals need a taller shelf, tins, packets and sauces, utensils, pots and pans the list is endless.
- Space between units
If you’re going to install an island make sure you have enough space to actually use the drawers and cupboards. The usual minimum recommendation is 1m. You really don’t want to be banging your shins on the dishwasher!
